Documentation missing L2TP client
-
i'm unable to find any documentation about configuring L2TP client,
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/interfaces/ppp-interfaces.html
there is no mention to it anywhere or at least i was unable to find it
i think that at least a couple of words that say "if you want to configure L2TP client go to interface/assignment/ppps add link type L2TP "
this way people will know where to go and that the feature is available
having the VPN / L2TP menu turns out to be misleading -
pfSense isn't meant to act as an L2TP VPN client. The L2TP type available for WANs is for WAN connectivity to an ISP which requires using that protocol.
It may, by accident, happen to work as an L2TP VPN client in certain scenarios, but it's not officially supported.
L2TP under the VPN menu is for the L2TP server, as all the other VPN servers are under that menu as well (and the L2TP server tends to be used only in combination with IPsec).

Interesting. I had always assumed pfsense would support L2TP/ IPSEC vpn as a client since it is so versatile but didn't look into it until now when I needed to set one up. Thanks for clarifying.
Anyhow took me a while to find this post confirming it does not so figured id reply with the words L2TP IPSEC vpn client all together to hopefully make this easier for others to google.
FWIW I did not try getting it to work with PPP. Seemed very unlikely I would be able to just luck into this working if it was not intended.

It really isn't. It has horrible issues with NAT and can be tough to configure and get firewall rules working with properly.
The only thing it has going for it is that it is built-in to many client OS implementations. But nowadays, so is IKEv2, which is vastly superior.

hehe that wasn't clear but I actually was referring to pfsense as being versatile and not L2TP/IPSEC vpns
