I followed some instructions found here [https://forum.netgate.com/topic/116235/guide-how-to-connect-pfsense-openvpn-client-to-ipvanish] but the newer versions of pfSense differ in some regards. I specified to use username/password for client certificate auth and get this error message:

"neither stdin nor stderr are a tty device and you have neither a controlling tty nor systemd - can't ask for 'Enter Private Key Password:'. If you used --daemon, you need to use --askpass to make passphrase-protected keys work, and you can not use --auth-nocache."

Any idea what I am missing?

Somehow it thinks your certificate private key is password protected. If it is, then don't do that. Remove the password from the key and then import it again.
