Trial ?

  • I've submitted a request for a trial of TNSR, and was contacted by a sales rep, who essentially interrogated me about my use case and wanted as much detail as possible. This is actually the second time I am trying to get this trial: the first time, sales rep outright refused and send my "info" to a pfSense sales rep who NEVER got in touch. Still waiting for my trial info. Is there a reason why you all are gating this trial so heavily ? I Mean, honestly, there are much more expensive products that aren't nearly as overzealous about trials, also we all appreciate the quality of your software, you are in fact, using open source software. I would rather not have to install all the components on a basic linux gateway from scratch and I like and trust Netgate products, but this is rather odd.

  • Overall, very disappointed with the pre-sale experience. Sales rep pretty much said that my trial request was bogus, and would not allow a trial unless I spoke with a sales engineer over the phone. I really do hope that Netgate rethinks their customer relation strategy, as it seems that at this point they are headed into a disastrous and embarrassing direction. As of right now, I am not confident that I can recommend any Netgate product or Service, for whatever it is worth as I am just one tear in a bucket. Clearly, there is good reason for so many deleted threads on here, and it isn’t only spam. Much success to you, but I hope you reconsider this approach. This is no way to treat prospective customers.

    Hi @mrancier,

Sorry that this was your experience. I reached out to our sales team and they do want to work with you to get the trial going, but they felt could not gather enough information to make sure TNSR was the correct product for you as it is a completely different user experience from pfSense. Each trial, for now, is hands-on (while also making sure not to flood your inbox) led by one of our SE's to make sure TNSR can accomplish the goals that you have as a business. We have found this approach is working well at the enterprise/xSP level and helps customers overcome the learning curve that comes with new technology.

We are working towards a more transactional trial experience later this year, but for now, we feel this approach is a better experience for the customer as we can help you get up to speed quickly with TNSR.

If you still feel that TNSR is the right solution for you, we hope you reconsider and work towards a trial with our team.

Don't you guys offer the trial, so we can see if TNSR is right for our networks? I mean after all the people running TNSR in their networks, will figure out quickly if it's right for them or not. Most would probably catch on quick as it seems a lot like Cisco IOS.

I gather TNSR is based on CentOS Linux and other open source components. Is it released under the GPL or does the trial not grant access to the source code repo?

Wouldn't it be better to offer a limited time use ISO on your website? I've wanted to use the trial also but it seems like a lot of hoops to jump through unnecessarily. Even Microsoft offers a shareware ISO for Windows 10.

By working with one of our SE's from the beginning we can make sure that your experience with TNSR is positive. It's not just learning the new software, it's making sure TNSR is the right solution for you.

    TNSR itself is not GPL.

Our modifications to GPL software included in TNSR are published on Netgate Github repositories, linked in our TNSR documentation under "Licensing". The contents of these repositories, and the list of included software and licenses, are updated along with every TNSR release.

This is something we want to work towards, but are not there yet.

  • Thank you Dennis your reply is very helpful.

I do look forward to seeing the new trial model for TNSR I'm very excited about that!
