Duck dns hostname and pfsense issue
-
Hi everyone,
I signed up duck dns free service, then I tried to setup an OpenVPN server on my pfsense 2.4.5 machine.
According to their instruction here:
https://www.duckdns.org/install.jsp (see pfsense setup).I needed to choose " dyndns services and select custom service ." in the pfsense ddns configuration page, which doesn’t enable me to set a hostname as it does by selecting different ddns service like NO-Ip (which I used once with no problem at all)
Ok I went on until the OpenVPN client export step.
I had to let “Host Name Resolution” blank:But when I tried to export a configuration I got this error message:
I don’t know what to do now since, according to their guide, I have to set the “custom” option for duck service, which in turn doesn’t enable me to set their domain assigned to me.
What did I get wrong and how can I fix this?
Thank you -
Why are you looking int the vpn anything? duckdns is does not have anything to do with vpn..
You need to set it up in the ddns section..
The instructions you linked to clearly call that out
"go to the page where you setup dyndns services and select custom service."Why your in anything to do with vpns have no idea..
Once you have ddns setup so some fqdn points to your public ip, then you could use that when you export a vpn config to point to this fqdn.

I already did that, but the custom option doesn't let you put any hostname in it as you can see from my image below:
I need it to export an OpenVpn client setup file.
I use ddns duck service because I don't have a public static ip address.
I already went through this very procedure when I had set up OpenVPN server on my previous pfsense machine, but I used NO-IP as my free ddns service at time and I had no issue.
Thanks
