OpenVPN broken: -proto tcp ambiguous

pfSense as OpenVPN client, from the systems log:
Options error: --proto tcp is ambiguous in this context. Please specify --proto tcp-server or --proto tcp-client
I set it for: TCP on IPv4 only
In other environments, I've used such arguments as:

proto tcp4-server
proto tcp6-server
proto udp4
proto udp4-server

Up to date.# strings openvpn | grep "udp" OPTIONS IMPORT: --explicit-exit-notify can only be used with --proto udp mudp.c udp-mtu --mtu-test only makes sense with --proto udp --fragment can only be used with --proto udp --mode server currently only supports --proto udp or --proto tcp-server or proto tcp6-server --mode server currently only supports --proto udp or --proto tcp-server or --proto tcp6-server --connect-freq only works with --mode server --proto udp. Try --max-clients instead. p = udp (default), tcp-server, or tcp-client p = udp6, tcp6-server, or tcp6-client (ipv6) udp4 udp6
