Question if ntopng fits this use case - not traffic flowing through, just keeping data on hosts on network

ntopng was recommended when I asked on reddit.

And I am checking it out and looks great.. if I were to plug device running it in between gateway and switch I assume.

But what i want is just simple network host presence and history overview of the network.
Something that pings the network every X minutes and makes nice list of current hosts. Something that keeps history of them.

Some extra goodies would be nice, but not much it can do when its just on the edge I assume. But really this is the core function I desire.

Can ntopng be used as this? Or is the focus geared mostly towards being that hosted fancy wireshark?
