Log Browser always empty

@johnpoz Yes I have that same blank section that was reported by sebM.
I normally use Safari, but get the same behaviour using Firefox.
-
@stepheng did you saw the 'interaction' I showed above ?
-
@gertjan I looked at the developer mode stuff (on both Safari and Firefox) and didn't see any traffic happening at all on the log page, beyond the initial load of the page.
Interestingly, on my rather old MacBook Pro, it doesn't work under Safari, but it does work correctly under Firefox.
... and as a third data point, it does work although a bit clunky on my iPad (it takes forever to load initially - one seems to need to give it some encouragement my selecting a different log file like the error.log and then it seems to work fine with the reload button.
I really don't know what it different about this iMac (running Catalina - it is probably the "cleanest" of my machines with the fewest add-ons and plug-ins as it is the newest and I've been very ruthless in not adding software that I don't think I actually need whereas my MacBookPro is about 10 years old and full of cruft.
I know that Safari can sometimes be a bit temperamental, but I've not seen anything quite of this nature before - I have seen the odd problem with CSS files being interpreted differently to other browsers. Firefox is my goto for such sites and I tend to use as my reference.
-
@stepheng The only 'native' Safari device I have, is an iPhone.
I used it's build in Safari to access the pfBlokcerNG-devel (3.0.0.6 now) logs and it was .... awkward.Managed to see 3 lines MaxMind logs, but had to change both log type and file somewhat randomly.
It's a browser issue.

Very browser related.
I gave up using Safari to read logs.
Firefox on my Mac works, or kind of... The trick is to first select "maxmind_ver" or "wizard" on the list and only then go to "dnsbl" or "ip_block" logs. Going straight to the last one doesn't work generally speaking.

Hey! I confirm the behavior.
I couldn't get anywhere with Safari.
But with Firefox, if I do that little "back and forth" between selected files as you described, it works... -
@sebm @HuskerDu @Gertjan Thanks for all the replies. It looks like we all have much the same experience that for whatever reason Safari does not play well with this, and even Firefox requires a bit of forward and back playing. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
As an occasional web developer, I'm always looking out for odd behaviours - some of which I can never quite get to the bottom of with some browser versions / OS version combinations, so I'm not entirely surprised.
-
Clicking like a maniac in Firefox is the solution. You can mark the topic as solved ;-).
-
Just bumping this thread to highlight that v3.0.0_7 (despite having changelog saying "2) Fix issues with Safari browser and log file selection") didn't fix my problem with Safari.

@gertjan Thank you for you're input.
It also works for me on iOS.
But on macOS 11.1 with Safari 14.0.2, it doesn't work.

No console errors, and no extensions installed... :(
-
@sebm @BBcan177 I can also confirm that it doesn't work in Safari 14.0.2 (on Mac OS X 10.14.6 Mojave) Some previous version did work on this Mac. It does work on my iPad running the most current version of iOS.
Like @sebM, there are no error messages showing on the console and although at one time I did have the extension for 1Password running on this machine, that seems to have disappeared now.
-
I've upgraded to 3.0.0_8, the problem persists on macOS and Safari 14.0.2.
Seems to be working find on iOS. -
@sebm If anyone is still looking into this problem I just want to add that it has been plaguing me for years.
iMac and Safari. Through various versions of Mac OS and Safari updates. Through various ver of pfBlocker and pfBlocker-devel. I had this problem on an SG2440 and now on 3100. Now I only occasionally bother to load the log files from my 3100. I wish someone would sort this out.It does work fine on a linux box w/ firefox.
A few years ago I saw a reference online to 'Ajax' being a problem with Safari. I don't know if Ajax is used.

As I have an iPhone, thus iOS (latest) and Safari, I accessed pfSense.
All the log pages showed up just fine.
I know this doesn't mean anything, but I really believe that as my 'mini'" Safari works, why shouldn't the desktop version work ?As soon as you receive someone at your place using an iPad or better : iMac, ask him to test.
And say to yourself : the only difference is : our local browser settings ^^ -
@jonh
It works fine in safari on my iPad running latest version of iOS. Does not work on safari on my MacBook running Big Sur. I don’t have any addons installed on safari on my MacBook. -

I never have bothered to use my mobile devices to access pfSense. My ancient eyeballs have enough issues with basic mobile device usage. That said, my iPhone and my iPad Pro both access the said log files (thanks for the suggestion). I borrowed a new macbook and it does not access the log files. iOS does not specify iOS build version of Safari other than it is the same base version of the underlying iOS (v14 in my case, more specifically, v14.4.2)
The borrowed MacBook, runs macOS, same as my iMac. Same version (11.2.3) also. And Safari versions are identical, (14.9.3 (16610.4.3.1.7)).
So, pfBlocker logs render just fine in iOS but not macOS. I doubt my local browser settings are an issue, no added extensions. The borrowed macBook also has no extensions. I will review my macOS Safari settings but as vjizzle noted recently, he observes the same issues as myself.
I will note that in recent years gone by there have been some functional differences w/ Safari between iOS apps and macOS apps, I don't recall at this moment what they were.
Anyway, thanks so much for the well deserved kick in the pants (ie: I should have thought of this myself), at least I can now use my iPad to check these log files rather than access them via the pfSense Diagnostics menu or firing up my linux machine.

Hi folks,
So the problem still exists obviously, and I went ahead and did a test across platforms to confirm:
macOS Big Sur 11.2.3 w/ Safari 14.0.3 = NOTHING DISPLAYED
iPhone iOS 14.4.2 = ALWAYS WORKS
iPadOS 14.4.2 = ALWAYS WORKS- The moment you select a log file on mobile devices, it displays it.
- It never works on desktop Safari (no extensions); I gave up and use Firefox for that purpose.
