      Hi Everyone.

I have a DELL R710 running Proxmox for the hypervisor and installed pfSense as a VM to segregate my lab network and VMs from my home LAN, also configured a separate VLAN for the on my home network to provide internet connectivity only.

I’ve configured two virtual network interfaces on Proxmox, one for the WAN (vmbr3) and one for the LAN1 (vmbr1). On pfSense vbmr3 is set as the WAN connection and is DHCP configured with vmbr1 set as the LAN1 connection, I’ve installed a Server 2016 VM and connected to the vmbr1 interface.

From the Server 2016 VM I cannot get the Chrome browser to connect to any web pages or the internet in general as Server 2016 was not getting licensed. I can ping 8.8.8.8 and google.com with nslookup google.com returning expected results, so this doesn’t seem like a DNS issue. If I remove pfSense from the equation and connect the server VM direct to vmbr3, the VM connects to the internet fine and Server 2016 is now licensed, I can also browse the web.

So I’ve narrowed down the issue to pfSense. I have the default configurations for pfSense, no changes made by myself. I have the exact same setup on my desktop PC but using VMWare Workstation Pro with no issues connecting to the internet to licensing Server 2016 or browsing the web.

If anyone has any thoughts on this I would be interested to hear.

      Thanks

      Phill

Did you obey the instruction in the doc for installing pfSense on Proxmox: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/recipes/virtualize-proxmox.html
Especially the Disable hardware checksum offload part?

          Hi.

I hadn't followed that guide, I had completed everything but disable the hardware checksum offload, once disabled it did the trick, all working fine now.

Does that mean the connection was just simply timing out?

Thank you for the hint, much appreciated.
