Re: NordVPN OpenVPN not supported on PfSense 2.5
Like most people here the update broke my nordvpn but on there help page there were instructions on how to fix it, there was also a disclaimer about the NordLynx protocol being broken.
My VPN is back up an running but at literally 1/20 of my normal speed.
      Anyone else have this problem?

@stevemosher No I'm not. I am using a temporary solution. Still waiting on a permanent fix.
I am getting my usual speed after I did some modifications to the settings in pfsense but it is still broken because now the nordvpn app doesn't work properly on my pc any more; once enabled it basically kills my computers internet connection.
If you're interested the temporary fix I went to "VPN" - "CLIENTS" and modified the file.

            1. UNCHECK Enable Data Encryption Negotiation
            2. MODIFY custom options tun-mtu and mssfix (changed the MTU settings to work with OpenVPN)
don't want to get on the wrong side of the moderator so early. so you would have to google "finding correct MTU settings for openVPN"
STRANGEly enough I found what I was looking for in the mirror Dimension <is san os>

๐Ÿ‘ป Approximately two weeks ago, I upgraded to pfSense 2.5. Today, out of curiosity, I decided to test my wireless bridge AP in my garage to see if there was a difference in speed if the ethernet is plugged in the WAN port vs port #1. To my shock, I found out that my internet speed has significantly degraded after upgrading to 2.5. No wonder, I was experiencing the occasional buffering delays when streaming. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ ๐Ÿ˜– I usually average 230 Mb/s. After the upgrade, the average speed is 30 Mb/s. I went down so many rabbit holes trying to figure out this issue because I didn't do a speed test right after the upgrade.๐Ÿ˜ข ๐Ÿ˜ง ๐Ÿ˜  I thought it was my relatively new managed switch (D-link 16 ports) misbehaving or the spanning tree protocol is not active despite the fact it is enabled or some other quirks with the switch. I also thought maybe it is my ISP that was stealing from me by throttling my internet. I ruled out my ISP by directly plugging my PC to the cable modem. I said to myself what changed? Then it occurred to me that I upgraded pfSense two weeks ago with new NordVPN instructions. To test my suspicion, I rolled pfSense back to the old NordVPN instructions for 2.4.5. Low and behold...to my surprise, my internet speed is back to its normal self ๐Ÿ˜‚ It appears that the NordVPN instructions for 2.5 are not compatible with this new upgrade and significantly slow down your internet. The workaround for me: upgrade to pfSense 2.5 and use the NordVPN instructions specifically for 2.4.5 in 2.5 with "enable data encryption negotiation" unchecked under openvpn tab until NordVPN fixes this issue. ๐Ÿ‘ป

@ghost-0 We went back to 2.4.5P1 and all issues are gone.

Looks like this still hasn't been fixed. Anyone managed to get a working connection yet on 2.5 or reverting back to 2.4.5 the only way to fix this now?

@jagradang I use site to site and have NEVER gotten more than 10Mbps, be it 2.4.x or 2.5.x.

                      @kom i have been running nordvpn for over a year on 2.4 and was hitting 80Mbps - 100Mbps on a 110Mbps line.

Since going to 2.5 i'm getting no more than 10!!

@jagradang I used to have OpenVPN configured with Mullvad and I was getting 30-40Mbps but I don't that running anymore.

Hi. When I was running 2.5.0 CE I had no speed problems with openvp client. I did run Surfshark, Airvpn, NordVPN and Torguard and I did hit max upload and download on my line (100mbit up and down). I suggest you check cipher setting and openvpn logging.

We've been over this before. 2.5.x is an issue with speeds. We used a test system as the 2.5.x updates came out and its still the same garbage.

2.4.5P1 is where we are and pretty much staying.

@vjizzle would be interesting to see what configurations you had to get those kind of speeds working as most people i have spoken to are having serious speed issues with 2.5.

If you could post any configs you have with settings that would be great. I have tried all sorts of combinations and failed to get anywhere near those speeds.

I'm with @stevemosher - Going to try a few more configs if not its back to 2.4.5 for me or switch to another firewall until they can get this sorted!

@jagradang Hi! I have my 2.5.0 config backed up but I went back to 2.4.5 p1 because of the many problems with unbound and with 2.5.1 off course the multiwan port forwarding being broken. But openvpn was not one of the issues. Now when I am running 2.4.5 p1 I swear not to touch 2.5 line of release. The ease of mind with 2.4.5 p1 is simply amazing. For example when I was running 2.5.0 every couple of days I needed to reboot it to keep everything running. With 2.4.5 p1 I now have 3+ Weeks uptime and counting. I havenโ€™t seen those uptimes ever when I was on 2.5.x.

                                Keep your 2.4.5 p1 and steer clear of 2.5.x like itโ€™s COVID-19.
