So I have an openvpn client connecting to PIA. I then have an openvpn server which the likes of my phone connect to and all LAN & phone traffic get routed down PIA.

The problem is when the openvpn server is started (phone does not even need to connect), I get intermittent access to the internet.
From a PC on the LAN if I run multiple ping attempts to 8.8.8.8 pretty much 1 in every 2 try's fails. But if I leave a working ping running, it runs fine no loss.
In this image I left the top pane ping running while running a few other pings to highlight the issue.

So the PIA server pushes the default route to you, I guess.
Did you assign an interface to the openvpn client instance?

If anyone else hits this, netgate support found I was using "openvpn" in the outbound NAT rules as the interface. Specifying this to the VPN Client interface resolved the issues.
