Basic Home Setup Suggestions (WAN, LAN, WLAN)
-
Basic network setup here at home using pfsense1.2.3RC-2. Wan port going to VDSL Modem, getting a public ip VIA DHCP. Lan Port assigned as 192.168.2.1. I also have a OPT1 Port available.
What is the best way to setup a wireless device? I am using my old ADSL modem, and just using the wireless side of it. I have set it up a few different ways, all which work.
I first set it up assigning OPT1 to use 192.168.3.1, and assigning the wireless device panel to use 192.168.3.254, and let pfsense handle DHCP. This all worked fine, however, with my packet shaping setup (for now I am basically just using the EZ Wizard Setup), I believe that OPT1 basically does not use the shaper, since it is setup between LAN - WAN, so I would need to do a custom setup. This led me to my next idea.
Second, I just bridged OPT1 -> LAN. I have read that bridging can kind of mess up the packet shaper, but since it is only OPT1 -> LAN, and the shaper is between LAN - WAN, it SHOULD still work right.. correct? Also, I assigned my adsl wireless device to 192.168.2.254, and again let pfsense handle dhcp. Will this setup work ok? For OPT1, how should the ip assignment be setup (even though it really does not need one). DHCP?? (even though technically it won't grab anything), or just an ip from the 192.168.2.1 net? such as 192.168.2.2 or something? and I assume instead of /24, I would just use /1 in this case?
My 3rd and final setup that I am using, is just using the last port on my gige switch and plugged the wireless device into here, assigned it to 192.168.2.254, pfsense handling dhcp and such. This seems to be working ok, though I think I would rather keep the wireless on its own separate port, just for security reasons and easier custom firewall rules, and then bridge it to my LAN interface, so it will still use my traffic shaping rules.
I had also had a buddy of mine suggestion setting up a VLAN, though, I'm not so sure that is needed in this case. Or is it?
Sorry this is kind of long, and I appreciate any help, and/or suggestions. If you need any more info, or a better description, feel free to ask.
Thanks you.
