    Network card Intel X710-DA2 - ports for TNSR are constantly down

      Hi guys,

      I have this server:

      HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 v4 20-Core 1.80 GHz
      2* Intel E5-2630L v4 | 32 GB RAM
      2* Intel X710-DA2 2-port 10 Gb SFP + Ethernet Adapter PCIe X710DA2

      I'm testing TNSR and I'm stuck in a state where network cards with a switch don't link to me. I tried 2 different switches, 2 different types of SFP + and also Direct Attach Copper Cables.

      Do you have any idea what else to try? Thank you!

      I have 4x 1G onboard ports that are associated with HOST OS Centos.
      These 1G ports work against the switch and I have a management interface for TNSR via SSH.

        X710 NICs should work. Since you're seeing them appear as dataplane interfaces in TNSR, I wouldn't expect that the issue is due to incompatibility with the software itself.

        What kind of SFP+ modules are you using?

        Are you seeing anything out of the ordinary when you run the following from a host shell?

        sudo vppctl show hardware-interface
        

        Any errors related to link up in /var/log/messages?

          SFP + modules test the following:

          • 10G SFP + original compatible HP (3COM) model JD092B (MM cable)
          • 1G SFP bidi UBNT model UF-SM-1G-S (SM cable)
          • noname DAC cables

          I am testing 3COM 4800G and HP A5820X switches.

          There is no change in /var/log/messages when connecting the SFP module or connecting the cable.

          I estimate a major incompatibility of X710 NICs and all tested SFPs.

            @network-admin Ok, I see. I can't vouch for those modules compatibility with that NIC. I would be using an Intel compatible module with that. It's common to use different brands of SFP+ module on each end of the fiber cable, so you can use a module that is compatible with your switch on one end, and then a different module that is compatible with your NIC on the other. It shows no carrier, so it's not even seeing that it's connected. The first thing I would try here is to use a compatible module and see if there is any improvement.

              @mleighton I bought a DAC cable that has an HP compatible SFP + module and on the other end an Intel compatible SFP + module and I already have a link!

              I also bought an Intel compatible optical SFP + and it also works in both the Intel NIC and the HP switch.
