How about updating the pinned topics?

Can we get the pinned topics updated to more recent guides/tips?
2 of the topics are 15 years old... -
@iculookn Precisely my thought when I came here to find rules for a PC that is used for gaming 60% and only needs UPNP for one specific game. My dumb consumer router could activate port rules by .exe
I am ignorant of how a router works at this level of abstraction (and most others if I am being honest) but I don't know why this sort of functionality isn't available in pfSense.
Anyways, big "what the hell?" to the pinned topic I was interested in being from 2009 with no updates official or from the community.

What's there is still accurate, but network support in games hasn't changed much in the last 20+ years unfortunately.
In almost every case you'll need one of either UPnP or static port outbound NAT rules. There may be some slight variations for consoles on where and how to best set that up but it's still the same things in the end.

@jimp Well, this is an interesting case.
Everything is fixed, by installing the new miniupnpd patch that is pinned at the top of the gaming subforum.
So, you are correct - but this is perhaps now added to pfSense and makes this appliance more consumer friendly?
In retrospect - this all just happened. But these pinned topics will need to be revised if this fix is added to pfSense in future builds. Some are no longer valid.

Yep, but I also did update that pinned post since the fix was discovered :-)

Indeed.

With the exception of needing the patch, the other info is still valid. Some games and/or consoles do not support UPnP so they need static port oubound NAT. If games support UPnP that will need to be enabled+configured.
