Three VPN Issues - can anyone help?

Hey all!

So I have OpenVPN set up to allow me to VPN back to my local network when away (not trying to access local resources, just to secure data when out on my cell), but I've been STRUGGLING with these few things that make it less than ideal.

First issue - when I get/send texts on my cell (android/pixel 5), it disconnects the VPN.

The second issue - when it eventually disconnects, it sometimes won't reconnect and I have to restart the service manually.

and Third, when I come home and my phone connects to the local network/wifi, it breaks the phones internet connection. I'd love to have this either stay active all the time and work seamlessly, or have some automated way to connect/disconnect (IFTTT?).
