I am looking to setup a VM instance from which to run PFS for testing (pre deploy) and possibly as an alternative to having a dedicated PC/device for production use.

I did a search for "ideal or best VM settings for pfsense" but to my surprise 2 hits with neither being relevant to my question. So for one who is creating a VM instance within VurtualBox what would be the ideal settings and virtual system type? (examples: mem size, disk size, NIC type/settings, video, etc).

      Thank you.

I used the Virtualisation guide in the documentation in order to set up a vm in proxmox.
The guide doesn't cover virtual box and I suspect there aren't many using it to virtualise pfSense. Docs cover the three popular hypervisors and the suggested guest configs and pfsense settings detailed there should help you. For a basic test setup I would think 2G ram, even less and a 5GB hdd are plenty.

@darcey Thank you for that info, I may look into proxmox and try it out, need to expand my toolbox a bit.
