WAN Wireless AP Internet access-Do I bridge, route, pray, What?
-
Hello, Awesome site and thanks for letting me join in with y'all.
I will say the problem is me and lack of knowledge, but if someone can lead me it is much appreciated.I have pfsense on a mini appliance pc.
pfsense 2.6.0 latest release
6 port intel nics
My nics are assigned:
0-wan,1-lan, 2-dmz,3-WUSB ( Wireless Card)
DMZ I am not currently using.
and are connected to a switch, but lan is going to a
USB Nic on my PC for logging into web interface.I have all the interfaces active, and assigned IP's.
WAN is getting DHCP
My wireless AP is advertising the wifi connection to my pc, and I can connect to it, but I do not get internet.
This is what I need to fix, and I currently have to use Wireless where I live which is making things more difficult and not real-life enterprise environment but I'm trying to work around this issue.I am pretty new to actual networking setups, except hyper-v , and that I used bridging mode to connect a specific nic with my wireless card and worked pretty easily, but as I confessed, I realize it is my lack of understanding of routing vausing issue here.
I do not know if I am supposed to bridge, route, etc... to accomplish what I need. -

You mean an access point created in pfSense using the USB wifi device?
Do you get an IP address when you connect?
If not did you enable a dhcp server on the new interface? If you do can you reach anything? Ping the interface IP?
Did you add a firewall rule on the new interface?Steve

@stephenw10 We can set as resolved but yes, I am using a linksys USB WIFI Card, also I tried a TP-link ap, and I get the same results.
I connect and I tried it several different methods. On a 10.10.10.x network, and on my LAn network, and the wifi network gets connected.
I realize it is not a netegate or pfsense issue.
It is that I am on a wireless card for internet and somehow it would be nice to try and connect my wifi internet card and the wireless from the netgate together albeit it is not optimal or something anyone would want to use in a corporate or enterprise environment.
I'll make due and move on to the lots of other learning available with pfsense.Thank You Sir.

That should be possible if you have a wifi device in pfSense that supports it (hostap mode). It will never be as good as an external access point though.
