gif loop detected
-
After upgrading to 22.05rc I get a lot of gif loop error messages every second:
Jun 9 19:23:06 pfsense kernel: gif0: loop detected Jun 9 19:23:07 pfsense kernel: gif0: loop detected Jun 9 19:23:07 pfsense kernel: gif0: loop detected Jun 9 19:23:07 pfsense kernel: gif0: loop detected Jun 9 19:23:07 pfsense kernel: gif0: loop detected Jun 9 19:23:08 pfsense kernel: gif0: loop detected Jun 9 19:23:08 pfsense kernel: gif0: loop detected Jun 9 19:23:08 pfsense kernel: gif0: loop detected Jun 9 19:23:08 pfsense kernel: gif0: loop detected
I'm using HE Tunnelbroker.
Any hints resolving this issue?

I'm not seeing that on my edge running 22.05 RC and I have two HE.net GIF tunnels (one for each of my WANs).
I'd double check your configuration, especially the interface configuration (both GIF and assigned interface) and the contents of the routing table. You may have a problem there leading to that loop.
IIRC that error is its way of saying somehow it's trying to send the outer traffic for the GIF inside the GIF interface itself.

@jimp Thanks Jim
I had to disable all the floating rules for the traffic shaper limiters for the gif interface and the issue was gone.
-
@p1erre Having the same issue also utilizing the HE Tunnelbroker. Disabled my limiters for the gif interface and still spanning gif0: loop detected
-
@commstech Do you have any floating rules active on the gif device? Removing these fixed the issue for me.
-
Just chiming in, I'm seeing these entries as well despite disabling all floating rules associated with gif0.
There wansn't any discernible pattern that I can tell for the first 12 hours after upgrading to 22.05, but for the past 3 hours, it appears every hour at exactly the 53rd minute, and goes on for about 12 times.Didn't happen before the 22.05 upgrade.I'm going to go ahead and delete those disabled floating rules and see if anything changes.
Edit: The pattern must be due to some activity on my that occurs every hour, I could basically generate the "loop detected" log entry by using my devices. IPv6 seem to be down too.
Deleting rules associated with gif0 doesn't seem to help.

@p1erre I did disable my limiters, but i missed pfblockerng rules. I think I will just deal with the spanning for the time being as it seems like a cosmetic issue

Just want to say I resolved the issue for those who might be experiencing the same thing.
I deleted the limiters I had from before the upgrade, recreated them and it fixed the issue.

Apparently people had issues with bringing limiters through the upgrade.
