      Hello,

I have a protectli Vault (4ports) and a R7000 router (Configures as AP)
My ISP is a fiber connection 1GBps.

I notice the wifi speed is very slow. Are there any settings within pfsense i can check to improve the wifi speed?

      Thanks!

@johan1974nl simply put no.. To pfsense there is no difference between a wireless client and wired one. Its not the AP in this equation..

Do you have any problems with your clients wired to pfsense?

BTW what do you consider very slow? You understand its unlikely to see gig over wifi, unless you running router and client with those capabilities..

When they say 1.9Gbps on that R7000, while they are not out right lying - they are pretty close to it. Its pure marketing numbers..

They add up both radios - they are using the RAW theory limits of the protocol, etc. With max streams, etc. Clients rarely have more than ability to use 2 streams, even if the router can do 4, etc.

The thing that always blows me is away is how they say 1.9Gbps, yet the router only has gig interfaces.. So how would 1.9 be possible ;) hehehe

So the thing can only do 3x3 for streams, so in theory you could get a 1300Mbps PHY, but that would only if your client had 3x3, and that is not very common to be honest. And even if it did with the overhead of wifi you could expect say 60 some % of that, rule of thumb is 50% of your PHY and your doing ok..

So your never ever going to see 1300, ever - couldn't because you only have gig interfaces anyway. And best case scenario even with that PHY it wouldn't be that.

But then for their marketing they also add the 600Mbps PHY your 2.4 clients could do - but no client would be able to use both of those at the same time.

Etc etc. etc.. - so in nutshell the number on the box is just a bold face lie! ;)

So what are you seeing in real world speedtest over your wifi. I normally see about 400Mbps real world over wifi with 2x2 AC without any issues. If good signal to one of my APs I can do 500 which is the max of my ISP connection.

Here just tested from my iphone 13.. Really couldn't expect more than that, my internet is 500/50

@johnpoz Those are the speeds I am expecting. I know WiFi is never going to reach the full speed. But now I am not getting higher then about 100

So I was curious I might miss a few settings to give this a boost.

Why are you thinking it's slow with pfSense?
Have you ever gotten faster speeds with that AP and another router or are you just seeing slow speeds and thinking it's pfSense?
As said, you need to look at the AP, not pfSense.
What speeds do you get wired?
What wifi version is the device you're testing with?
What frequency are you testing with, 2.4 or 5?
What settings have you adjusted in the AP?

What were you getting before? Take pfsense out of the question and test your wifi. Run iperf test from your wifi client to your server..

Example - just ran iperf on my phone to my nas, even routed over pfsense. And my nas is currently streaming 4 things to people via plex.

              iperf.png

And seeing 300ish, and spike there near the end.. A great test of your wifi would be plug something into the wire on your R7000 and then from wifi client run iperf.. What do you get?

100Mb sound like a bad cable limit.

The R7000 is a router as in pfsense, are they both configured as routers? What is your network architecture and where are you actually testing to and from?

Yup, it sure looks like a bad link that's defaulted to 100M. Check for that first.
