Help finishing Firewall Setup
-
HI. I have setup a Protecli 4 port firewall using PfSense 2.6.
My instructions for setting it up come from a digital privacy themed book, well known and well regarded. There were step by step instructions in the book for configuring PfSense, which i tried and had many problems with.
Luckily, the author created custom scripts on his website for easy configuration. So thats what i did. I uploaded a custom script with all the settings i needed.
My problem is: In the book, one of the last steps to ensure everything is working, is to go to the "OpenVPN" tab and check the "status". The author says you should see the status as "up", and then you know everything is working.
However It never shows as "up". Its either "down" or "reconnecting". I've tried refreshing it here on the page, and also rebooting, but neither helps.
I can provide more info if anyone needs it.
One thing i'll mention, is that the Author gives instructions to modify settings so that it connects to a specific ip address server. In my ProtonVPN settings, i can navigate to several different server options, and download a text file, which contains the IP address. I was then instructed to enter this IP address into my settings (i forget exactly where). The strange thing is it shows several variations of the IP address. If i choose any of those with the extra numbers tagged on the end, I get an error that it is invalid. But it will accept the root ip address (156.146.54.97). I just want to mention this, because I'm not sure if I completed this step correctly, and perhaps that is causing the above problem.
:
Just to make clear, the goal of this build is to route all my internet traffic through a custom server, using my ProtonVPN service. It is already configured for this, I just don't know how to get this last step finished.

@fiyawall Double and triple check your authentication credentials in your setup. From what I see, my setup included, this is usually what will cause the issue you are experiencing.

thanks for this. Status now says up!
However, whats strange is that when doing a test (on https://browserleaks.com/ip), the IP address is the one assigned on my desktop VPN app.
In other words, the IP address should be the one i specified in my OpenVPN settings on the firewall, but it is not. Also if i turn off the VPN application on my desktop, i get no internet, which is sort of defeating the purpose.
Not sure what im doing wrong here. The IP address should be as it is here in the remote host:
Instead my IP address is showing as the one that I have on my desktop VPN app.
I tried turning off the VPN on the desktop, since the firewall should be handling all this, but then i just have no internet access at all.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

UPDATE.
Actually it appears this FINALLY worked. I killed the desktop VPN and for some reason now the proper IP address is showing.
I hope this is the end of this whole journey, what a relief.
