NordVPN and pfsense 22.05 on 1100
-
I currently am running pfsense 2.4.5_1 and figure it's about time to update. Right now everything is running incredibly smoothly and I am happy, but I thought I'd like to try experimenting with a package or two. To do this, it appears I need to updating to 22.05. In my experience, there are always growing pains when updating as some features I may be used to using stop working, or I may even break my entire Internet connection due to my inexperience.
Is there an easy way to roll back to the current 2.4.5_1 so I can restore my working configuration if I encounter difficulty?

@larryjb Netgate will send you the firmware, and I would assume they would send an old version on request.
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-1100/reinstall-pfsense.html 2.4.5 is pretty old, they will probably recommend just installing new and restoring the config from backup. You're correct, never install packages for the wrong version. If it's close enough one can set the "previous stable version" update branch but 2.4.5 is several versions old.

We only send out the versions we support.
At present that is 22.01 and 22.05.
@larryjb we do not recommend running 2.4.x any longer as there are dozens of bug fixes and many many many security holes that have been patched since 2.4.5_p1 was released on June 9, 2020. Also ZFS is default on 22.x, and not available on 2.4.x.
Go here to request 22.05 firmware: https://www.netgate.com/tac-support-request

Does the NordVPN configuration saved from 2.5.4 load up easily when upgrading to 22.5?
@rcoleman-netgate Do I need to request the firmware before running the 22.5 update, or can I safely run the update from System>Update?

@larryjb 2.4.5? Yes, all configurations are forward compatible.
Back up your config before you do an online update as they sometimes go sideways. But we recommend requesting the file, doing it offline, and restoring just so you are on ZFS.
But backing up your config before any upgrade is best practice.

I'd request it first, in case you lose Internet. :)

Thanks, will do.
I always keep a backup of my config anyway. Setting up NordVPN was a huge pain for me, so I always have a VPN config and a non-VPN config saved.

Thanks all, update went well, VPN and other configurations appear to have been preserved.
Later I will try an install from the file to see if I can get zfs up. I would really like to have the ability to use different boot environments, but that is a separate story for later.
Again, thanks all.
