pfSense+ 23.01 GUI Suddenly Very Slow
-
Hi All - A little over 6 weeks ago I upgraded from pfSense CE 2.6.0 to pfSense+ 23.01. The upgrade went like a charm. Since then, I upgraded the Patches package and then added all the recommended patches. About 3-4 days after adding the patches, the GUI has gotten extremely slow starting with the login page, then loading the main web page and any other pages. There is no degradation of throughput.
System info:
- Intel Core i5-2540M CPU @ 2.60GHz
- AES-NI CPU Crypto: Yes (active)
- QAT Crypto: No
- 2 GB DDR3
- 6 x I211 Gigabit Network Connections
6 VLANs configured
Installed packages:
- freeradius3
- ntopng
- openvpn-client-export
- pfBlockerNG
- pimd
- Shellcmd
- System_Patches
Running services:
- dhcpd
- dpinger
- miniupnpd
- ntopng
- openvpn
- pfb_filter
- pimd
- unbound
I don’t see anything obvious that would cause the GUI to suddenly become so slow. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

@nfld_republic Can pfSense resolve DNS (Diagnostics/DNS)?
If you look at Diagnostics/System Activity or Status/Monitoring is CPU or RAM maxed out? -
@steveits No problem resolving DNS queries.
(Edit to add) Using the GUI DNS resolution has a very slow response time. I did the check on the CLI (e.g., via ssh) and resolution is also very slow - but even on the CLI everything is slow. pfSense is also running the main nameserver work and/etc/resolv.conf
is correct with pfSense being the first server listed. It does not seem to be a RAM or CPU, see below:
last pid: 96910; load averages: 1.28, 1.01, 1.03 up 0+13:22:07 18:48:11 250 threads: 5 running, 225 sleeping, 20 waiting CPU: 5.7% user, 0.1% nice, 0.8% system, 0.2% interrupt, 93.2% idle Mem: 488M Active, 673M Inact, 102M Laundry, 427M Wired, 190M Buf, 87M Free Swap: 1524M Total, 696M Used, 828M Free, 45% Inuse

I think I found the culprit: ntopng
I removed the package and now everything back to normal responsiveness.
