How to diagnose unresponsiveness of OpenVPN?

I manage two systems, where I have this issue: A Netgate 1100 and a Netgate 2100. On both, after a few weeks, the OpenVPN service fails to respond. I usually fix this by going into Status → OpenVPN and restarting the service.
I’d like to improve the service’s reliability and am therefore looking for suggestions on how to track down the source of the problem.

Best to check the logs for hints on both ends: system, OpenVPN
Ensure that the OpenVPN log level is set to a proper value. 3 might be sufficient for this issue.
