Trouble with Spotify streaming. Firewall rules at fault?
-
Hi guys.
I have occasional issues with streaming from Spotify to my AppleTV 4k player.
What happens is that it would just freeze sort of. Spotify loads, is able to search songs and what-not, but can't play anything. Spotify isn't exactly helpful in explaining what may cause this. Can you see anything in my rules below that can or should be tightened more? Even opened if that may be the issue?
It can play and work nice for weeks or longer, then act up. Now the ATV is not playing at all, Spotify webplayer does still work though, but not connected to speakers...Edit: Found one myself - the rules using appletv-groups didn't have the destination "!rfc1918" set. Added that now too.
Thanks!

You've chosen to black everything (last rule) and make rules for ports/destinations that you want to pass.
Nice.
Are you sure that you've created a rule for every possible port destination ?If you've missed one, you should see it in the log of the last firewall rule.
To proof my point : replace rule 4 and 5 with a pass all rule : No more issues, right ?

@Gertjan Well, as you mention, I have kept a close eye on the log to add whatever I did miss initially. But you may well be correct that it still needs something new suddenly, but weird that it wasn't caught in logs. I want to know what my devices talk to. Not easy, I give you that, but works good eventually, apart from Spotify which is not always happy about it... But for the rules part (apart from your comments) it looks alright?
But I have woes about what Spotify does on UDP 3480, 81 & 82.. Can't really make that out, but think something with pairing. But is it needed after that...

Spotify does on UDP 3480, 81 & 82..
And that's just one 'app'. And it can change 'tomorrow'.
Basically : if you decide to use an app, you have trust that app, as the usual : "gime the source code first and I look up what it is doing my device, and decide then if I am ok with that" isn't really an option these days.
Add to that : the app is developed for an AppleTV, so Apple itself had also a good look at the code, and if it isn't "Apple worthy" (= read : if the app is a risk for Apple") then the app won't be made available.
With "risk" I mean : just one single user that discovers that "an app" is communicating info that it shouldn't communicate to some 'unknown' destination. The day this happens is the day that the Apple Down Jones index falls to the bottom. Share holder will kill de current president, and name another one.
What I'm trying to say : It's Apple's interest first, and by long, to be sure an app 'behaves' as they have far more to loose more you ... -
@Gertjan Agreed. It is a choice, and yes, I have chosen Spotify and like most of it. But I still don't have to blindly accept all it does... I know it is just my opinion and that it matters as much as a drop of water in the ocean, but still, if I can control it in my little end it would be good. Apple is Apple and will always be. I like the player, but is at times a little bumpy road unfortunately as they'd expect you to go all in for everything to work smoothly.
