How to Update from 1.2.3-RC2 built on Tue Aug 11 04:25:58 EDT 2009 to latest?
-
Hi there,
I have been trying to update my embedded Alix to the latest firmware with GUI (automatic/manual) and also console but nothing seems to be working after the device boots. I always get errors while updating and while booting. Error like this:
g_vfs_done():ufs/pfsense1[READ(offset=1300590592, length=4096)]error = 5
What is the best way for me to update to the latest snapshot? Isn't it supposed to be working now? And on the snapshot server what is the difference between a pfSense-1.2.3-4g-20091007-1655-nanobsd-upgrade.img.gz file and a file with a 4G (capital) in the name?
Thanks in advance!

That error is usually indicative of a hardware failure, but not always.
I would backup the config and start with a fresh full image from a current snapshot. If I saw that error on one of my systems, I might also first dd all 0's to the card before writing out a new image.
Upgrades should work now, but the base system must be a version from after when the update mechanism was fixed.

Thanks jimp. I will do a re-flash and check it out…

And what is the difference between the 4g and 4G images? Or has this just been changed to the 4g with a small letter?

I was wondering the same thing. I think you are right, since if you check the timestamps on the file, after a certain point, only the other case is there.

There is no difference, they are both 4GB images, just the capitalization of the image name changed. If you have more than one choice, go for the one with the newest timestamp.

Hey. I just flashed the new 1.2.3-RC3 images and found out that the automatic update is not there anymore. Is this supposed to be like this? Can we do only manual updates starting from now?

Automatic update did not work on NanoBSD. It did not properly take into account the image size being used, and it was determined that it would take too long to fix before release.
Manual updates still work, and you can do an update by URL from the console if you don't want to download it to your PC first.

Thanks jimp. I will wait with my first update until the final is released I guess ;)
