VLAN interface Parent
-
This should be an easy question, but I can find the answer.
Does a parent interface have to be enabled?
I have some pfsense firewalls that have many assigned VLAN sub interfaces... working fine with the Parent Interface disabled, and I have some where if the Parent Is disabled all the vlans on that parent stop.
It is possible that the ones where this works, are older pfsenses that have been upgraded over time, and although now on 2.7.2 were built some time ago on older versions.
Four new ones I built today seem to say the interface must be enabled.
I ask because this may mean I have a problem waiting to happen on the older upgraded ones who's behaviour is different.
What is the correct setting?

Yes. All that it takes to make a VLAN is the VLAN tag inserted in the frame. If the parent isn't working, there's no frame to insert the tag into.
