I'm pretty new to pfBlocker, so apologies if this question has been asked before

      • or the reason is obvious

I installed pfBlockerNG-devel on my system and followed the link below to setup
      https://linuxincluded.com/block-ads-malvertising-on-pfsense-using-pfblockerng-dnsbl/

Navigating to Firewall/pfBlocker/DNSBL and looking through the DNSBL Whitelist I see a number of entries that look like they may be related to advertising
      e.g.
      .amazon-adsystem.com # amazon app ads
      .px.moatads.com # amazon app 2
      .pixel.adsafeprotected.com # amazon app 4
      .adsafeprotected.com # amazon app 6
      .anycast.static.adsafeprotected.com # CNAME for (static.adsafeprotected.com)

Trying to navigate to any of these links in a browser, they get blocked by uBlock Origin

      • but I guess the Whitelist purpose is to allow these sites
      • where uBlock Origin is not active

Other links in the DNSBL Whitelist like
      .pfsense.org
      .netgate.com
can be navigated to in a browser without any issue

      So my question is:
why would URLs that look like advertising be whitelisted in pfBlocker

Thanks for reading and any explanation much appreciated

My guess is that not whitelisting the 'ad' URLS can break functionality on some apps. I've had this happen to certain apps where I had to whitelist 'firebase settings' that was blocked by my ad lists in order for the app to work correctly.
