Hasving issues registering the controller itself.

I can access the GUI of the MIM of the controller.
I copy the JSON data. I then go into the pfsense software GUI [system > advanced...}.
I paste the JSON data into the Activation field and it errors out.

To be clear, the pfSense system that hosts the controller does not need to be registered on the same controller. If that's what you're trying to do, then the error is expected.

Are those actually two separate systems? If so, was the config cloned or backed up and restored on the other system (it contains the controller db by default)?

If both systems were set up separately, try increasing the MIM log level for both and show the logs for each after reproducing the issue.

@marcosm Perhaps im misunderstanding the documentation.

            https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/mim/registration.html#activate-mim-on-pfsense-plus-software-instance

To complete the registration, the controller must also be activated on the instance.

It's not mentioned on that page - after MIM is enabled, the local system is automatically added to the controller for management. You only need to register additional instances/devices.

I got hit with this foot gun today also. Might be a long day but the registration process confused me. So, no need to activate the controller "to itself" ?
