New Linux and openvpn with 'old' pfsense
-
Hi, having an installation with a 2.4.4_3 pfsense with some working openvpn windows clients. Now I want to use Mint 22.1 Cinnamon as a client, but I didn´t get it to work. It seems Mint network manager supporting openvpn is not really made for the 'archive' file from (this) pfsense.
I´ve read some hints Mint 20.x (ovpn 2.4) should work, but this Version doesn´t support the new hardware.
I have searched für a nice third party gui like the one for windows from openvpn.net, Which can be downloaded in an older version if needed. But failed yet.
I think I have a good chance to update pfsense to 2.6.x without breaking working openvpn, if needed. With 2.7 I had failures.
Upgraded pfsense (2.6.x) VPN connection file exports will be the same as 2.4.4?I know, there is a guideline to have always the newest version of everything - including the bugs. If you have limited working power and don´t want to mess up with the users, you have to make some tradeoffs.

That doesn't make sense.
You cant' use very old stiff with very new stuff.2.4.4 is ancient, using a very ancient OpenVPN version.
So, first, update your pfSense. 2.7.2 is available.
Then try again - and things start to work 'like magic'.
Btw : it's probably possible to make it work anyway - be ready to face some complex issues.

Hi @Gertjan, thank you for answering. I´m not the only one, who is disappointed about openvpn makers suddenly treat their recent defaults as incompatible. As far as I know there is no easy (for people doing other stuff than openvpn too) documentation and/or recommendations for a soft transition.
I think the pfsense could be upgraded to 2.6.x easily, leaving the old vpn connections intact, but still using old standards. 2.7.x probably will not come up after upgrade if VPN connections were not altered before updating. But I don´t find any documentation, what to change to have a smooth transition from 2.6.x to 2.7.x.
"yust update to 2.7.2" is not a viable solution!
My hope was someone with knowledge about openvpn beyond using the wizards, could share some knowledge about paths for transition without interrupting vpn services for all who have to upgrade.
