Did a cli upgrade from 24.11 release on amd64(kvm)
      Ended up in this

      4a77c76c-d305-4c89-a395-695210c6e673-image.png
      108a11f9-a0a6-4d8f-9831-59b9f71f5af9-image.png
      56bccf9f-2fec-4473-a74b-0e245faef5f7-image.png

      Disk is
      c78e2846-137d-4044-9622-d35bbc18a3f0-image.png

System reboots manually to previous version.
This is repeatable, already tried 3 times.

Didn't notice any obvious errors, system downloads new packages.
Any pointers to debug this more than welcome

It seems it is virtio related.
Changing from virtio to sata allowed the system to move further
and then ended up with no network interfaces found.
Upgrade did not complete and reverted to 24.11

Most probably didn't like virtio ethernet driver too.

@netblues I run a mpcie to NVMe drive on my 2100, long story short anything that did not officially come with the 2100 you need to disconnect and let the install run after reattach your custom hardware.

This was definitely not the case for the previous updates.

Actually it disconnected everything, didn't find an interface, refused to proceed
          and reverted.
          Nice approach.

So you suggest changing all the emulated interfaces to e1000, rebooting
upgrading, and MAYBE , changing back will work?

Virtio was a supported interface till 24.11
Did't see any support drop anywhere too.

and now pf managed to also report it
Boot verification failed for default_20240714144502_20250329075912. Netgate pfSense Plus was automatically rebooted back into default_20240714144502_20250329075912_20250329082412. @ 2025-03-29 08:28:37

                @JonathanLee

Its changing hardware options on kvm. And I'm running vlans at the kvm level.
so its a lot. And most probably this will invalidate registration (again).

I need a test license for this to test under virtio/kvm.

@JonathanLee I run a pfSense+ ZFS-based instance on a Proxmox server using QEMU/KVM. The network interfaces are virtio device but the storage is SCSI.

Started with 2.7.2 CE and upgraded all the way up to 25.03-BETA 2.

No issue with with the virtio network interfaces.

Well the only difference is redhat 9.5 kvm, , hardly differences.
It can't find the interfaces to reconfigure, and then a shutdown is initiated.
                      After rebooting , everything works

Hmm, I have a number of KVM/Proxmox VMs running virtio NICs and disks without a problem.

It clearly boots the kernel OK though. Are there any errors in the boot log?

@stephenw10 It boots the kernel only after changing the driver to sata.
If it is virtio it can't find any volume.
Changing everything to e1000 kicks in the deadly interface reconfiguration script
(which if I do it will work, since interfaces are detected.)

On the same kvm, a ce 2.7.2 works happily with virtio,
What do you need from logs?

Oh so where does it stop if the drive is set to virtio?

The logs above show it booting the kernel but then failing to find the rive mount root from. The logs leading up to that would usually have device detection etc and might have error output.

@stephenw10 Yes, this is also my understanding. Apart from console output, how this logs can be salvaged?

If it was me I would just enable a virtual serial port and connect to it through the hypervisor. But you do need to enable it in pfSense and set it as primary console.

Otherwise, yes, just scroll back and look for error in the video console.

changed hdd to virtio, attached console, and tried upgrading
Didn't catch anything strange (to my knowledge that is)

Hmm, so that's the first boot after upgrading?

How does the drive present at that point in 24.11?

Ah interesting. I'm not using that device type. How is that shown in the hypervisor?
