Hmm, I have a number of KVM/Proxmox VMs running virtio NICs and disks without a problem.

It clearly boots the kernel OK though. Are there any errors in the boot log?

@stephenw10 It boots the kernel only after changing the driver to sata.
If it is virtio it can't find any volume.
Changing everything to e1000 kicks in the deadly interface reconfiguration script
(which if I do it will work, since interfaces are detected.)

On the same kvm, a ce 2.7.2 works happily with virtio,
What do you need from logs?

Oh so where does it stop if the drive is set to virtio?

The logs above show it booting the kernel but then failing to find the rive mount root from. The logs leading up to that would usually have device detection etc and might have error output.

@stephenw10 Yes, this is also my understanding. Apart from console output, how this logs can be salvaged?

If it was me I would just enable a virtual serial port and connect to it through the hypervisor. But you do need to enable it in pfSense and set it as primary console.

Otherwise, yes, just scroll back and look for error in the video console.

@stephenw10 I'll try my (serial) luck, and post the findings. (when the home is asleep)

changed hdd to virtio, attached console, and tried upgrading
Didn't catch anything strange (to my knowledge that is)

Please press any key to reboot.

Ah interesting. I'm not using that device type. How is that shown in the hypervisor?

@stephenw10 If I change it to sata (or scsi) it boots.
If I change virtio lan to e1000 I get network interfaces.

It is a virtio issue. But I don't see any logs complaining about it

Pfsense ce 2.8 beta also crashes with the same (non) error, as expected
                                    Just tested.
And it fails miserably too, since ce version can't revert gracefully
Had to revert via snapshots., thankfully

@netblues Hello guys! I run an HP ProLiant ML310e Gen 8 physical machine and I'm experiencing this issue, could anyone help?

I didn't want to have to reconfigure everything, I have backups saved but there's always something that we change and forgets to copy the most recent backup 😬

I don't use virtual machine, could someone help. Thank!

@renanlofiego This is related to virtio and kvm only.

Your case seems different. Any logs?

Now that ce version does the same, I will try installing to a fresh alma linux machine

I'm using bridge network interfaces too, but this doesn't explain booting issues
I don't seem to get many options too
