VSphere shows no VMtools installed
-
Hi All,
(ESXi 4.0, ESX 4.0u1 + PFsense 1.2.3 RC3)
I have seen discussions about the VMtools being out-of-date, but on my side it directly shows no VM tools installed (while the packages are installed). the tools are working inside the VM as vMotion, shutdown and so on work…
But the issue is problematic for us - the vSphare alerting constantly complains about lost VM hartbeat - due to missing VM tools. Is there a workaround to show the tools to the VMware?
Thanks in advance.

are you using the VM-tool package that is available from the packages section or did you install the actual vmTools?
I've had no issue with the packages one and have been running it inside ESXi since ver 3.5 for that with no warnings.

I know this isn't as helpful as it could be, but I remember running into that problem the first time I installed pfSense under ESXi 4.0. I've actually had better success running the LiveCD installer from ISO than using the VMWare appliance… and at the moment, I'm not getting that complaint out of ESXi like I used to.
FWIW, if you install from ISO and then don't install the VM-tools package, it runs fine without complaint. ESX should only complain if it seems the VM tools, then it doesn't, then it does, then it doesn't...
