Keep loosing WAN IP Address - dhclient does not seem to do update

  • I running 1.0.1 and keep loosing my external IP.  Looking at the system logs I see the last entry for dhclient as:

    Nov 1 21:41:19 dhclient[5862]: bound to 71.12.165.131 – renewal in 42454 seconds.

    It is now Nov 2 12:39:27 and the log shows no other dhclient entries.  If I am reading the above entry correctly shouldn't I have had some time about Nov 2 09:41:00 that show a renew being done?

    Thanks for any info,

    John Morey

  • Same problem here, running PFsense 1.0.1 on a WRAP Box.
    The WAN DHCP is always down after the ISP changes my IP.
    After i release the WAN IP manually everything is okay again.
    Is there a bug in the dhcpclient ?

  • I did some more looking.  I checked /etc/db/dhclient.leases.xl0 and it contains the following entry:

    lease {
      interface "xl0";
      fixed-address xx.xx.xxx.xxx;
      option subnet-mask 255.255.248.0;
      option time-offset -21600;
      option routers 71.12.160.1;
      option domain-name-servers 24.197.160.17,24.197.160.18;
      option broadcast-address 255.255.255.255;
      option dhcp-lease-time 84908;
      option dhcp-message-type 5;
      option dhcp-server-identifier 172.26.96.132;
      option dhcp-renewal-time 42454;
      option dhcp-rebinding-time 74294;
      renew 4 2006/11/2 14:28:52;
      rebind 4 2006/11/2 23:19:32;
      expire 5 2006/11/3 02:16:26;
    }

    It states that the renew time should be 2006/11/2 14:28:52.  As of now my latest log entries are:

    Nov 2 14:50:13 sshd[58433]: Accepted keyboard-interactive/pam for root from 192.168.63.17 port 37491 ssh2
      Nov 2 14:16:17 dnsmasq[5943]: reading /var/dhcpd/var/db/dhcpd.leases
      Nov 2 13:25:10 sshlockout[53783]: sshlockout starting up
      Nov 2 13:25:10 sshlockout[53783]: sshlockout starting up
      Nov 2 13:25:10 sshd[53780]: Accepted keyboard-interactive/pam for root from 192.168.63.17 port 37126 ssh2
      Nov 2 13:16:15 dnsmasq[5943]: reading /var/dhcpd/var/db/dhcpd.leases
      Nov 2 12:16:05 dnsmasq[5943]: reading /var/dhcpd/var/db/dhcpd.leases

    It should have done a renew.  Wouldn't this show in the log?

    Thanks for any help/info,

    jmorey

  • We have the same problem with 1.0.1 (we had this problem before but after RC2 built on Tue Aug 1 18:24:49 UTC 2006) it disapeard….. we did not change the hardware....

  • Same here version 1.0.1 is not renewing address it has to be a  bug that carried over from 1.0 to 1.0.1 I didn't have the problem with any of the RC releases..

    Mac

  • As a workaround I added the following crontab entry:

    1 0,4,8,12,16,20 * * * /sbin/ifconfig vx0 down ; /sbin/ifconfig vx0 up ; /sbin/dhclient vx0

    Since doing this, the same day as my original post, I've not lost the WAN IP address.

  • But what has been changed in the dhclient since the RC release?

  • @tunge2:

    But what has been changed in the dhclient since the RC release?

    Nothing has.

  • I can't comment on the pre/post RC release behaivor as 1.0.1 is the first version of pfSense that I've used.

  • Hi !

    Looks like the problem still exists, my WAN link droppes the DHCP ip address on a regular basis, and i need to click the Renew button to get it up again.
    I´m using pfsense 1.0.1 with the latest snapshot.

  • i've got the same issue..
    not only is it getting really anoying, but im starting to get in shit for it (company not appreciating this) and i may have to switch to a firewall that doesnt drop the ip address… would be a shame because i love everything about pfsense

  • Me too…

    1.0.1...

    My WAN goes down and I check the WAN interface and it's I.P. is all 0's..

    Quick renew fixes everything..

  • Everyone that is having problems, please tell us what ISP you are using.

    Thanks!

  • ISP 1 (fails most often) uniserve www.uniserve.com
    ISP 2 telus www.telus.net
    both are adsl links

  • Having the exact same problem.

    Have been using pfSense 1.0.1 but changed yesterday to 1.0.1-SNAPSHOT-12-06-2006. I have had this problem along time and it's not related to my upgrade of firmware. The problem occurs when my ISP is braking my connection in some way. Happens.. maybe.. every 2-3 month.

    @sullrich:

    Everyone that is having problems, please tell us what ISP you are using.

    Thanks!

  • I am copying up a new image for you all to try to http://www.pfsense.com/~sullrich/1.0.1-SNAPSHOT-12-12-2006/

    It will be done in a few hours, please double check the file size is not changing before downloading!

    However!  You need to reinstall before using this or you need to update /etc/crontab to: http://pfsense.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/pfSense/etc/crontab?rev=1.21.2.9;content-type=text%2Fplain;only_with_tag=RELENG_1  (notice the tabs, not spaces!)

    If you decide to simply update /etc/crontab then you need to issue a killall cron && cron from diagnostics/command to restart cron after updating.

  • Thanks alot for the snapshot. I was looking forward to a solution! I've got the same problem as mentioned in this thread with my swiss isp cablecom. Happened every other day, so we'll see soon if it'll work or not.

    Cheers

  • Any updates?

  • Excellent, while reading your post the wan failed:
    Dec 13 16:21:28 dhclient[270]: exiting.
    Dec 13 16:21:28 dhclient[270]: short write: wanted 21 got 0 bytes

    Manually had to press "renew" to get it working again.

    Annoying problem.

    Cheers

  • Okay, I can confirm that the new snapshot is not working in this issue.
    I have a problem with my ISP that my IP is dropped 5-10 times a day. I don't believe at the moment it is because of pfsense.

    Anyway, this makes me a great candidate for testing if pfsense is renewing my ip address when it detects it's down. I can say it dosen't. If I press the "renew" button manually, I get the interface up.
    My WAN interface is dc0
    My LAN interface is xl0

  • i have the same problem, and i have done this (no warranty!):

    edit /etc/rc.newwanip
    and in the beginning of the file i added:

    if($curwanip == "0.0.0.0") {
            log_error("Failed to update WAN IP, restarting dhclient.");
            exec("dhclient rl0");
    }
    –----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Replace "rl0" with you WAN interface!
    It would look like this:

    /* WAN IP address has changed */

    $argument = str_replace("\n", "", $argv[1]);

    if($argument <> "") {
    $curwanip = find_interface_ip($argument);
    $interface = convert_real_interface_to_friendly_interface_name($argument);
    if($curwanip == "")
            $curwanip = get_current_wan_address();
    } else {
        $curwanip = get_current_wan_address();
        $interface = "wan";
    }
    if($curwanip == "0.0.0.0") {
            log_error("Failed to update WAN IP, restarting dhclient.");
            exec("dhclient rl0");
    }

  • have done some research, and it seems that the problem is dhclient and not pfsense, this guy is not using pfsense:

    http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-current/2005-October/056279.html

  • That was from 2005.  Since then dhclient was replaced with a version from OpenBSD.

  • well,, the error is the same:
    "short write: wanted 21 got 0 bytes"

  • @Selective:

    Yeah, that's very strange.  Just to make sure, you are on the latest testing snapshot?

    THANKS SO MUCH!

    This works like a charm.  My ISP drops my IP from time to time, it was annoying because pfsense doesn't auto-renew it for whatever reason.  I'm running in vmware.  It works fine now!  I can see it in the system logs as it happens.

  • Nice to hear it worked !! :D

    Yes, im using 2006-12-14 right now, maybe its time to upgrade dhclient to 3.0.5 if its possibly ?? or even replace dhclient.

  • yeah, definately looks like the same error. What drives me crazy is that the versions before 1.0 of Pfsense worked flawlessly concerning the dhclient Wan IP issue. Was there a version change?

    Cheers

  • Everyone having problems please replace /etc/rc.newwanip with http://pfsense.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/pfSense/etc/rc.newwanip?rev=1.21.2.23;content-type=text%2Fplain;only_with_tag=RELENG_1

    Let me know.. Thanks!

  • Sorry to say, but I have tested another firewall and all my problems disappeared.
    The thing about my ISP is changing my IP a lot.. Yea, it disappeared. Clearly it was pfsense. On the new firewall I have had the same WAN IP since the installation ~2 days ago.

    The weird part about this is that pfsense has been working before without problem. All problems started when I changed my ISP. So.. again, not expert, but I believe ISP have different ways to give IP's and pfsense can't handle them all in a correct manner.
    On the new firewall I can see in the logs that it comes false dhcp offers from time to time on the WAN. The new firewall just drops this. Maybe pfsense doesn't? Anyway, I have no clue…

    it seems like the script is using "wan" as a real interface name.
    maybe it should be like this ? :
    exec("dhclient {$argument}");

  • I don't know if this new script fixes the Loose IP Problem. But after replacing the old version with the new one I had problems with my OpenVPN. Always the script tried to re synced the OpenVPN, I received a error:

    Port [undef] 1194 already bound

    I use the pfSense-1.0.1-Embedded.img.gz with just changing the /etc/rc.newwanip to the proposed version.

  • Nextrem: not related, known issue, please see the openvpn threads.

    Everyone else:

    I have updated rc.newwanip, try this version:

    http://pfsense.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/pfSense/etc/rc.newwanip?rev=1.21.2.24;content-type=text%2Fplain;only_with_tag=RELENG_1

  • Thx sullrich

    Just replaced and rebooted. Let's hope the best ;)
