I have built myself a new pfsense based home router/AP. I used an Atom D510 board with 2G of ram, a 250G SATA HD, a PCIe Intel gigabit card (LAN), a PCI Intel gigabit card (WAN), and a Rosewill RNX-G300EX PCI wireless card (OPT1).

WAN and LAN report no errors. OPT1 shows errors on the out. Right now after running for 15 minutes since last reboot it shows 0/81. Is this a problem?

For reference OPT1 is bridged to LAN, and type is set to DHCP. LAN is bridged to OPT1. I added a rule for each to allow all traffic to pass between their subnets. DHCP is enabled on LAN. The wireless feels a little slow but it may just be my client. Otherwise it seems to work fine.

      Does this sound correct?

      Thanks

      Bob

I take it back. After I rebooted the box the wireless stopped working. The clients can see it but can no longer connect. I have changed the type setting in the OPT1 interface to Static but it makes no difference other then the LAN interface now sees errors too. I changed it back to DHCP.

Any suggestions on how to get pfsense to just work as an AP without just buying a separate AP and plugging it in? I have already bought 2 different wireless cards that were on the HCL and so far no luck. Any suggestions?

By the way the LAN still works fine. If this can't be made to be the AP and be reliable then I will just scrap it and buy a Draytek box.

Your configuration doesn't sound correct.  I suggest you bridge OPT1 with LAN (and not LAN with OPT1) and set OPT1 type to Static (not DHCP) and don't assign OPT1 an IP address. (Bridging with LAN effectively means OPT1 and LAN share LAN's IP address.)

I have a WLAN card bridged with LAN as described above and it works fine though I did have some troubles with two different Windows XP clients getting an IP address through DHCP. I tweaked the registry on the clients to fix that.
