      Hi,

I am looking to by a mini-pcie wireless card for my pfsense box (2.0).
On ebay i found this card:
      http://cgi.ebay.de/Atheros-5418-AR5BXB72-AR5008-Wifi-Mini-PCI-802-11ABGN-/140390207230?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20afe88efe

      My questions are:
      1. will it work with g mode?
      2. is there any indication it will work with n mode once it lands in freebsd?
      3. will it work with 5ghz frequencies?

      Thanks,
      Marcus

        1. Yes
        2. Yes
        3. Yes

Look at the card description - 802.11ABGN.  That lists the 4 modes it supports, and the fact that it supports 802.11A says that it supports 5 GHz.

Just be aware that they are described as single band radios, meaning you can either use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz but not at the same time.

          @Cry:

That would indeed be quite an annoyance.
I found this card here which seems to do dual band, can you tell me if it is supported in pfsense/freebsd?

          Thanks a lot,

A quick bit of Googling for ar9820 FreeBSD suggests that it's supported in FreeBSD 8.0.  If so it should work on pfSense 2.0.

If you want to use 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz at the same time, you will need two cards.  As far as I know, access points that use both at the same time actually use two separate devices internally, one for each frequency.
