Newbie install pfsense on using VMware

Im using VMware 7.0.0 on XP. i have installed a PCI realtek network in addition to the onboard VIA one. i have downloaded the pfsense VMware appliace version 1.2.3 from the website and am trying to set it up.it runs but at the moment it only see 1 network adapter. i want to be able to use the WAN (onboard) and the LAN (NIC card). i can add an additional network card as NAT in the settings but am none the wiser as i cannot identify which connection is what..
Am i using the correct settings?…apologies if this is a simple solution but i havent had much experience with networking.
i was hoping to test this out the device(s) (to a PC or switch for example) connected to the NIC network adapter would be behind the firewall.
my router gives out a 192.168.1.x (255.255.255.0), so im guessing that my pfsense firewall (VM) would have a 192.168.1.x address too?? i have seen on other sites that the pfsense is on a different subnet eg. 10.10.10.10???

due to all the confusion i have deleted the Vm and am starting from scratch. i just want to ensure im doing it correctly this time...any suggestions?

did you add an additional nic in the VM settings ? if yes … be sure to use a compatible virtual nic (intel e1000)

erm..it should work its a realtek (need to check model # when i get home)..i think where im going wrong is on the additional network card it should be BRIDGED and not NAT?? (not sure what replicate physical network connection state is)..

oh..so does it have to be a virtual nic then?? ???

try this bro

OS: windows xp 32bit
vmware workstation
pfsense 2.0 rc1

go to network area connection of your host pc and set this:
onboard nic (LAN) - uncheck vmware bridged protocol only in properties the rest check
nic1 (WAN) - check vmware bridged protocol only in properties

diagram:

modem/ISP >>>>> WAN (nic1) pfsense in vmware workstation
…..................... (LAN) onboard nic >>>>>>>> switch/hub

virtual network editor in vmware workstation setup before going to pfsense installation
vmnet0 - bridged - select your onboard nic
vmnet 2 - bridged - select your nic1
note: remain vmnet1 & vmnet8 as default settings

vmware adapters
network adapter - custom - vmnet0 (bridged)
network adapter2 - custom - vmnet2 (bridged)

then you can now proceed to installation
after installation, default lan ip of pfsense will be 192.168.1.1
you can change that according to your likeness

go back to your network area connection
set your lan nic(which is your onboard nic as what i use above)
go to tcp/ip and apply this
ip: 192.168.1.2
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1 <<<<<< must be same with your lan ip of pfsense
preferred DNS: 192.168.1.1

put this in your browser 192.168.1.1
username: admin
password: pfsense

that's it!
