Ipad Problems
-
I am using pfsense as a simple router/captive portal and it is working well. However, I am having trouble trying to connect with an iPad. It seems to connect fine but when you open safari it does not bring up the splash page. Even when I manually go to the splash page (ipadress:8000) and enter the key it just stays on the splash page and will not give internet access. I know there have been previous posts on this topic however solutions are on links which no longer exist. If anybody could give me a few pointers that would be great.

I don't have an ipad. On my Linux netbook when I use Firefox and the netbook WiFi link is associated with the pfSense interface with captive portal enabled I first see the captive portal home page where I enter the voucher code and the browser goes to the correct page. When a voucher expires and a web page access is attempted I see the captive portal home page, I enter a voucher code and Firefox usually goes to the web page I previously tried to access. Occasionally Firefox redisplays the Captive Portal home page at which point I can reenter in the browser location bar the URL of the page I was trying to access and the browser goes there. However when I use Opera instead of Firefox, on voucher expiry Opera frequently doesn't go to the URL I was trying to access.
Firefox and Opera definitely behave differently on Captive Portal voucher expiry. Perhaps what you are seeing is a Safari thing related to captive portals. Can you try a different browser?
A Google search for safari "captive portal" showed over 30,000 hits and one included a report that after typing in the CP home page URL, entering the authentication information, quitting Safari then restarting web access succeeded.

Thanks, I'll have to try this. I have a feeling that it is something with safari as other devices (some running android) seem to connect without a problem. People with similar problems have also stated that they have been able to connect after messing with settings etc but they are not sure what they did. I will report back if this works.

I have now tried this and it seems to have solved my problems. I'll explain further for anybody else with this problem. When you connect to your wireless network on your ipad it automatically brings up a splash screen to sign in. I then enter my password (my user is set by default in the splash page). After this I appear to be connected to the network and internet however when I open safari it says that I am not connected to the internet. Next I double click the main button (bottom of ipad) to open a list of running programs. By holding the safari icon a red minus sign appears and I use it to quit safari. I then go into my settings again, turn off my wireless, start my wireless again, and finally re-open safari. After this I am connected to the internet and can browse. I don't know if this is a problem specific to the iPad or if it is on all iOS devices, or even all safari devices. I also don't know of any way to fix this on pfsense's side to prevent this. Once again thanks to wallabybob.

Hi, I have been used an Ipad 2 (iOs 4.3.5) with the CP and everything worked fine.
When you connect to your wireless network on your ipad it automatically brings up a splash screen to sign in. I then enter my password (my user is set by default in the splash page).
This didn't happen to me with pfsense CP, but with other CP it happens. When i attempt to navigate in safari, I became redirected to the CP page and after loggin I can navigate without problems.
