Hi, I want to create an AMI with pfSense installed, has anyone here managed to make it work ? My initial idea is to use a FreeBSD 8-STABLE image (http://www.daemonology.net/freebsd-on-ec2/) and copy the pfSense files over it and try to make it boot, I will do some tests but I appreciate any suggestions on this

      Thanks

        Hi again …

after a bit of effort I sort of got pfSense running on amazon ec2, for anyone interested in trying it out, the AMI is ami-8700c9ee

A few considerations about this image:

        • use it at your own risk
        • the webconfigurator is not starting on boot, to start simply log in and use the "11) Restart webConfigurator" option

Although it is still a bit useless now I wish to thank you guys for making such a good router and to Colin Percival, I hope this can be useful to someone …

Thanks for creating the AMI. I'm having difficulty connecting to it. I created an Elastic IP and permitted ports 22/23 in the security group. I can't telnet or ssh to the public Elastic IP.

Can you provide some more detail in how you configured your VPC and accessed the pfSense AMI?

@Ravnos_kum, I am looking to complete this and actually get this working insid a VPC.  Are you still actively working or still interested in this project?

im SUPER keen to see a pfsense AMI!

i was really surprised to find theres not one out there already - it would be SO useful - i'd much rather maintain all my firewall configuration in a form that is portable beyond amazon EC2.

just deploying a project there now and keep punching the wall that i dont have access to pfsense :-/

Actually it does not work in a VPC, and it is one of the reasons that made me give up on going further. The original freebsd image can only run on micro instances and for some unknown reason ($$$) it does not work on VPC

No, I am not interested on this anymore, I wanted to use some of the pfsense nice features instead of paying more for some limited support of the same features from amazon, but there were some limitations like the one above that made me give up on this

Yeah … it would be nice to set up a pfsense box like that, but all the problems I have faced made me think it does not worth the effort, maybe I will try that again one day, but don't hold your breath ...

Has anyone succeeded in using pfSense in EC2/VPC? Would be really nice if you could share your info on how to create the AMI.. I'm willing to help testing and developing the image.

                  Cheers

OK, that was 72 hours, but it's available now.
