Using external AP, but cannot get any interface to act like wireless.
-
I have usd IPcop for years, eagerly awaited the 2.0 version, and only now am finding that this isn't going to work on my newer 1U Proliant servers.
I knew of pfSense for a while but never fully investigated using it, and I wish I had long ago.Anyway…
I saw the tutorial on how to use an external AP, but it says that I need to set an interface to "wireless" and it doesnt show me how!
Do I have to physically hook the AP up to the PFsense interface for this to detect or something?
(I'm betting it doesn't work that way) ;)I have use the "Blue " interface in the past, and this had other features, like MAC blocking and other things.
How can I activate the wireless features of pf Sense on the interface I choose?
I'm a bit stuck, and i assume i'm missing something obvious, but I can't find it. :(

Which tutorial? Where in the tutorial?

You do need to to connect the external AP to an interface on your pfSense.
How can I activate the wireless features of pf Sense on the interface I choose?
For an external AP connected to pfSense over a wired connection there are no "wireless features of pfSense" to activate.

I suspect you are trying to apply some advice given for a different context or you have not given us all the relevant information about your configuration. Lets start with clarifying which advice you are trying to follow.

I went to the external WAP tutorial…
In this tutorial, his interface page shows some WLAN features, even though it's an external WAP.
Check out the tutorial.
Also, read the section at the bottom where it states: "Add an Internal Wireless Interface", as this refers to the WIFI interface above for external WAP's - like mine.Let me know whats up here…
=step 3=
http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/InstallationGuide======================
Yes, I know I need to connect the WAP to the firewall, that's obvious, but the question specifically was: does pfSense change the interface options becuase it detects the WAP somehow?
I would think not.

I'm guessing you are referring to the Step 3 section of the document http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/InstallationGuide
I'm sorry I'm so slow. I can't see where Step 3 in that document says "set an interface to wireless".
I went to the external WAP tutorial…

Is this the same tutorial? I can't see an interface page showing some WLAN features in http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/InstallationGuide

pfSense will present a different set of options for an internal (plugged into the motherboard) WiFi interface that it will present for an internal wired interface. Wireless options are presented only for wireless interfaces.

If you read the last section of that page, it mentions how an external WAP was set up in the video.
However, the video doesn't show how his interface got set up the way he shows it's set.It clearly shows WLAN configs, yet the section below says it's for external WAP installation/
I want to use MAC filtering on my wireless network and any other ways I can secure my wireless network but it seems that a WAP merely plugs into an interface and that's that?
Odd, even ipcop does better than that. :(
What are yor thoughts on how to get a really "securit wise" WAP interface managed by the pfSense firewall itself WITHOUT installing a wireless card?

If you read the last section of that page, it mentions how an external WAP was set up in the video.
The section headed Add an Internal Wireless Interface? The same section that says This tutorial is for those who want an internal wifi interface. ?
-
Uh, hangon, let me go re-read this….
i cant hav gone dyslexic at the "entire page" level....
-
Okay so I wasnt crazy…
The BOTTOM section titled "Add an Internal Wireless Interface" states "You can skip this tutorial if you are planning on adding an external Access Point as outlined above. This tutorial is for those who want an internal wifi interface"
They are referring to section #3 above, where above is the "WINK" video that shows how to add this external WAP.
SO… this is where my confusion comes from.
Overall, the question is, how do I get the equivilent of a "BLUE" interface for use by an external WAP?
I want thinks like:
-
Portal behavior
-
MAC Filtration
-
etc…

I don't know what you mean by BLUE interface - maybe this suggestion will be helpful:
You have 3 interfaces on your pfSense: WAN, LAN and OPT1?
Connect OPT1 to a LAN port on the external WAP, enable Captive Portal (I assume that is what you mean by Portal) and specify the MAC filtering you want in the Captive Portal options, add firewall rule(s) to OPT1 to allow/block access as required (default OPTx rules block all access).

A blue iterface is an IPCOP reference.
http://ipcop.org/1.4.0/en/install/html/decide-configuration.htmlI will try to see where the check box for "Captive Portal" is and try this. Sounds like what i need.
This still doesnt clear up the confusion in the documentation I linked to.
Did you see what I was referring to about it stating that an external WAP was what the video referred to?

See Services -> Captive Portal

No. I have limited time to volunteer to these forums and frankly, I'm now almost terminally bored with trying to get you to be more specific about what you are referring to. For example you wrote
@burnsl:They are referring to section #3 above, where above is the "WINK" video that shows how to add this external WAP.
I guess you mean the document section labelled "Step 3" (I am unable to identify a section #3 in the document). "Step 3" contains the phrase This Wink Graphical Tutorial but it is not clear to me what Tutorial is being referenced. You clearly took it to mean a particular tutorial but which one is unknown to me.
I appreciate the specific reference for the BLUE interface. Its a pity you haven't been as specific in the documentation discussion.
-
Good grief…
I think i was as clear as could be.
After all, you have correctly identified the section I mentioned in your last post.I'm sorry you became "terminally bored" however, considering how many times I rephrased my question for you, I'll conclude this is a common ailment that you're all too familiar with.
I appriciate your effort.
P.s.
I snip because you're condescending, but, hey, look on the bright side, at least you're hard to talk to!;)
