Pfsense wtih BT Infinity and multiple static IP's?
-
Hi,
I'm using pfsense 2.0.1 i386 with 1 x LAN and 1 x WAN connection. The wan is plugged in to a BT Openreach modem.
I have configured pppoe in pfsense to login to bt with my supplied adsl username/password. All is working fine in this respect. Now, I've paid BT for a block of 8 static IP's. I wrongly just expected that the first of these IP's would be assigned to the
router but what is happening is I am getting a dynamic address from them. It seems when using BT's supplied router
that you have to configure it in some way with the static IP addresses.
My problem is that I do not know how to do this with pfsense?
BT have supplied me with the range of IP addresses and a netmask and DNS server.Any thoughts on this one?
Many thanks

Hmm, interesting question.
What router are they expecting your to use? Homehub 3 or some business device?
Unlike most other ISPs BT know who you are by the phone line you are connecting on. The login credentials are the same for every home hub, bthomehub@btbroadband.com with password whatever, I used 1234 as pfSense wants to have one. Thought you seem to be saying otherwise?
It could be that they will simply route traffic to your connection whatever the PPPoE IP happens to be.Have you tried static IPs in your block?

Edit: I see you can only get this with the Business Hub. I assume you have read this:
http://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10020/c/426,3674,3850It looks like you simply assign your WAN statically with a subnet mask to include all your IPs.

I would say it definitely can be done since there are others doing similar things:
http://business.forums.bt.com/t5/Broadband-and-internet/Infinity-to-Cisco-PIX-Firewall-with-Multiple-Static-IP-Addresses/td-p/33735
Though in that case they ditched all BTs equipment.Interestingly in the guide to setting up a single static IP it seems you simply power cycle the router and it receives it. Multiple static IPs seem to be handled by BTs router using 1:1 NAT mapping between external public IPs and internal private IPs, it does not route the public IPs (at least in the guide).
If it were me I would first attempt to add an IP alias to the PPPoE WAN and assign it a static IP in your range. See if you can then ping from it.
