      I've installed pfSense in VMware Server 1.0.3 on three different sets of hardware and am curious if anyone else has noticed the same slow system beeps. Normally pfSense does its little jingle when the system starts or shuts down, something like:

      "bee-bo-bee-bee-beep!"

      On two of my virtual installations, one on an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and one on an Intel Core 2 Duo 6300–both of which perform hardware assisted virtualization--the jingle sounds more like:

      "beeeeeeeeeeeee-boooooooooooo-beeeeeeeeeeee-beeeeeeeeeeeee-beeeeeeeeeeeep!"

      Unfortunately the hardware of the third installation has no system beep, so while it doesn't have hardware assisted virtualization, I can't say if that is the cause of the crazy beeping.

      Even stranger, the beeps seem to be completely normal when booting the VM from the live CD.

      Has anyone else noticed this?

        This is a cosmetical issue. Happens to me also when running the embedded version on nexcoms for example. A full install on the same machine has normal "beepspeed". It has to do with the ticks/second values of the timecounters afaik. It only affects the beeps, nothing else.

          That makes sense, VMware is typically not the best time keeper. As a fix, I disabled beeps in VMware with the following line in ~/vmware/preferences:

          mks.noBeep = "TRUE"

          Wouldn't want to wake my co-workers!

              Hi tristano,

              I have the same problem.

              Do you have any idea where I would put mks.noBeep = "TRUE" in the windows version?

              Desperately trying to find a way to stop these beeps as pfSense is not really usable for me as is :(

                Look for preferences.ini in the Windows version. Supposedly this is at \Documents and Settings[userid]\Application Data\VMware\preferences.ini.

                    Why does pfSense beep anyway. I always found it annoying. Yeah it lets you know when the box starts up but you can view the console or webgui to see that as well.

                      It was a highly requested feature.  We cannot please everyone, some people want it, some don't.  My suggestion is turn it into a Checkbox in System -> Advanced.

                        Checkbox sounds good, that was nearly enough to put me off using it, might just be my setup but its (or was :) ) unreasonably loud lol!
