VPN configuration that doesn't need admin rights on Windows 7
-
Hi. My company laptop that I travel with is setup with VPN access to my company using an OpenVPN client, but they won't install any other clients on my system or give me admin rights to install one myself. They are OK if I set up a VPN with any of the builtin software on windows 7 (except PPTP) as long as I don't need admin rights to do it.
It appears that OpenVPN needs a client installed on Windows 7, and that IKEv2 that is in windows 7 isn't supported.
I have the normal IPSEC configuration set up and used by my Ipad and Android phone, but for some tasks having a keyboard and windows is so much easier, and when i am on travel I would prefer not to have to carry a 2nd laptop.
Any ideas folks?
Thanks!

Not sure I completely understand your situation. They installed a VPN client which doesn't work without admin privileges - which you don't have? Then the answer is that they need to fix it :-)
The old openvpn client doesn't work on Win 7 very well, but there are other clients which work for normal users, but require admin rights to install. -
And I think thats the problem :)

I know the ipfire FW has IKEv2 support, but that pfense doesn't (yet). So is there any other way to get a VPN configuration set up that doesn't need new software or admin rights configured?
thx

Not a secure one, not easily.
The OpenVPNManager option in the client export installs an alternate GUI that runs OpenVPN as a service, and does not require admin-level rights for the client to run.
Also you might look into the Windows Viscosity client for OpenVPN.
