How can we solve this error (see below) We want to use the mac-filter option in Captive Portal We do not have any other routers in our network (only 1 PFsense system) So why this error?
Aug 29 13:53:06 php[15570]: /index.php: Captive portal could not deterimine clients MAC address. Disable MAC address filtering in captive portal if you do not needs this functionality.
If we select this option (see below) the error will go away but the mac filtering is disabled and that is not what we want….......
Disable MAC filtering
If this option is set, no attempts will be made to ensure that the MAC address of clients stays the same while they're logged in. This is required when the MAC address of the client cannot be determined (usually because there are routers between pfSense and the clients). If this is enabled, RADIUS MAC authentication cannot be used -
Do you have routers between the clients and the pfsense machine? Let us know how your network is setup, layer 2 information is a funny thing.
-
This generally shows that the clients are 2 or more hops up from the physical network. The captive portal clients need to be on the same network and not behind another router.
Also, DO NOT cross post. You posted this to the mailing list as well.

Sorry, Sorry, Sorry, for the cross post… the clients are not two or more hops away from the network. And there is no other router then the one PFsense machine....the physical network is a 192.168.10.0/24 subnet.... one big happy network with only one router ((Great) PFsense) and one 24 port AT switch.....
-
Maybe the switch is doing some sort of routing? pfSense should have no issues knowing the MAC address of the machine if it is directly attached without a router in between.

Do your setup use any wireless AP ?

No wireless router in the network…...only one PFsense system and a 24 ports AT switch....

Try another switch if the problem goes away then you need to look at the setup of the AT switch there must be something blocking pfSense seeing the mac
