Esxi firewall to vms – suggestions

Working on completing my first install with pfsense.

Looking to gather some collective knowledge. I was looking at setting up carp, and possibly having the management console behind pfsese.
Also will I need failover / load balancing or what recommendations do people make on determing that.

I'm afraid if pfsense fails, I'll be locked out of the management console and unable to fix anything.
We are for sure doing multi-wan also.
I'm also going to install openvpn to get remote access to the gui. Suggestions?
