Monitoring creation of SMTP sessions

Hi,

to avoid spam storms, we want to monitor the creation of SMTP sessions ( insert SMTP states ??) and set an alarm.
We are looking to the MIBs and can't figure any form to see only the SMTP states.
It's possible to monitor it ?
Maybe adding any package ?
