What are the data sources for ntop/ntopng traffic monitoring?

Does anybody know how ntop/ntopng keeps track of host throughput and traffic amount?
Where does it store that information? Does it get the info from squid logs?
Where are the data sources for ntop/ntopng traffic amount monitoring?
