i have been trying to setup a squid 3 reverse proxy, and almost got everything working

my self signed certificate attempt seems to be the problem.

Is it possible to use a free signed ssl certificate from say: https://www.startssl.com/

I made one with that website, but cannot figure out how-to make it into an in X.509 PEM format to add to pfsense.

      Am I totally off or?

You can't use a certificate from this website, because what you need for squid is a certificate authority, not a certificate. The only practical way to get a certificate authority is to make one yourself, then add it as trusted on all the computers on your network.
