UK Virgin fibre - pfSense WAN setting?
-
Hi there,
I've been using pfSense very successfully for many years now with both ADSL (driving Vigor 120 ethernet modem) and BT fibre (driving BT Huawei 612 vdsl modem). In both cases I just set pfSense WAN side to PPPoE and filled in the PPPoE User/Pass with the appropriate values for my account - bingo, live Internet connection :-)
For Virgin fibre, I have reconfigured my Virgin Superhub as a 'modem only' unit and (as advised on Virgin support site) hooked up LAN port 1 to my WAN port on my Alix pfSense box. The problem I have on Virgin fibre is that Virgin tech support assure me (probably correctly, I accept!) there is no User/Pass so I have no idea what to fill in there. Now, it might be that I should not use PPPoE on the WAN side when hooking up the Virgin Superhub, but have no idea what to use instead.
Any light you can shed would be much appreciated.
Regards

Did you try DHCP?

[co]Incidentally, I got connected to Virgin Media today and after initial hiccup, I'm now connected.
Cable modems tends to allow connection from one MAC address. If you connected the Superhub2 to your laptop prior to connecting to pfSense box, most probably Virgin still got your previous MAC registered. First of all, you need to setup DHCP, as almabes said. Then, connect the Superhub to LAN port and switch-off the hub. Wait for a min or so and then switch on the the hub - that will refresh the MAC address. Best!
