You have to use the pfSense dns forwarder for this to work (services>dns forwarder) and assign this as dns server to your clients via dhcp (default if dns fields are empty unless you have disabled the dns forwarder completely).

I have captive portal working on my home system as well as a wireless ISP business I do consulting for.

Are you using pfSense 1.2 full version?
What is the link to the tutorial you are using for Captive Portal?
With captive portal are you using port 80 or 443? I recommend first getting it to work with port 80.
Are you running captive portal on the LAN ethernet interface or from a Wireless interface?

As an additional data point, you can also add the DNS servers to pass through to accomplish the same thing if you're so inclined.

              nb
