Proxy server for only part of network

If I install a proxy server package will the router become only a proxy server? Or can I use the proxy only as needed for some IP's while allowing other IP's to work normally through the router bypassing the proxy function?

Use the proxy in explicit mode vs transparent.. Then setup which users you want to use the proxy at the client.
