      Hey,

I am interested in setting up a failover node for pfsense on my vmware esxi machine.

My current setup is as follows:

-ADSL modem in bridged mode connected to pfsense physical pc router with 3 nic (1 WAN, 1 LAN, 1 unused).
-Managed switch connected to LAN port of pfSense router.
-ESXi machines, freenas, multiple PCS wired to managed switch.

Currently my switch is set up as unmanaged, but I can enable managed mode for more advanced features. I was wondering if its a good idea to set up a failover pfsense instance on my esxi machine, and how would be the best way to split the copper coming from the modem to feed both wan ports (to limit human intervention during failover).

Anyways, tell me what you think!

Sorry to dig up on a old thread

I'm considering a similar setup and would be interested in the answer to this too.

i would think it is fairly pointless to setup a failover on the same physical machine. it will either keep working or it'll die along with all VM's.

          i all other cases: https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Configuring_pfSense_Hardware_Redundancy_%28CARP%29

indeed this is pointless to have your failover on the same virtual host.

If you had a 2nd virtual server maybe this would be of some use…

Upgrades take no time at all, and you can always roll back to a snapshot (take a snapshot!) if it has any issues.
